A sweet story on teaching caring, with valuable lessons!
Two stories in one-double the fun reading-is what you get in “Oh Brother!: A Nico and Tugger Tale.” In the first of a planned series you will meet Nico, an only dog that likes it that way, and Tugger, the pesky puppy that changes Nico’s life when Tugger is brought home. The book provides both dogs’ versions of the same tale, illustrating that even with these canine brothers there is more than one side to a story.

Oh Brother! A Nico and Tugger Tale is a heartwarming story about two adorable dogs, written by Kimberly Sentek for young children and their parents. Through the dialogue of two dogs struggling to accept each other, the author opens readers’ eyes to issues which occur in most families. As they see a diverse view of two different characters – Nico, the older dog, and a new puppy named Tugger – young children learn the great lessons of sharing and giving.
At first, Nico feels thrilled when his family brings a new puppy into the house, but he soon realizes that the puppy is not a regular toy that he can forget in the corner. Annoyed by the puppy, which is always following him and sometimes crying, he feels as if his life is crushed and destroyed forever. Feeling hurt and unhappy, the older dog tries to reject the playful puppy, who has stolen the attention of the people he loves so much. Nico used to be the only dog in the family and was always pampered. Now he must share his family, house, and toys with Tugger. The older dog grumbles about the new arrival who has settled and has in the process dramatically changed his life.
On the other hand, Tugger is a very emotional, cute puppy, who is thrilled about his new family and the older brother he always wanted. Struggling to find the way to Nico’s heart and to fit in to his new surroundings, the little puppy hopes that things will change and Nico will become his best friend. But first, Tugger must learn how to share, give, and be more patient.
With time, the two dogs adjust to changes in their lives and learn how to live in harmony. They both learn that all changes are not as dreadful as they seem at the beginning. If you give each other a chance and a little time, life can be fun. This story about the lives of two lovable dogs is a great example of how to teach children about sibling rivalry, who must learn how to overcome disagreements and develop a wonderful friendship. It will encourage young readers to accept a new friend or an addition to the family. The bright illustrations, done in soothing colors, brought this story to life.
I would recommend this children’s book for parents who want to teach their children how to accept changes, adapt to new surroundings, and make new friends. This is a homey puppy-dog book, fun to read while curling up on the couch with your child! A delightful rhyming story, which teaches young children great lessons on how to rise above dramatic changes in their lives.
